Newsletter 02 – SS 2019

Dear members of the Graduate Research Programme Changing Frames, dear readers,

The summer semester of 2019 got off to a flying start with the first annual conference in Konstanz on 16-17 May 2019. The event was jointly organized by the postdoctoral researcher and project coordinator, Dr Tilly Laaser, and doctoral researchers. Our (international) collaborators, partners, mentors and associated colleagues actively discussed the topic "Conservation: A Humanities Discipline?". Lively presentations and conversations gave rise to new ways of considering interdisciplinary collaboration in art history, Kunstwissenschaft, art technology, and conservation sciences.

During the semester, thanks to input from courses, exhibitions, research trips, both abroad and in Germany, each of us were able to progess in our doctoral projects and experience different facets of research. For instance, Anna Katharina Thaler flew to London to attend a Spring Course at the Courtauld Institute and visited several exhibitions related to her topic on J. M. W. Turner. Lisa Braun traveled around, from Graubunden’s mountains to Memmingen, to visit altarpieces from her corpus and city archives where she found important information on the atelier and family of Ivo Strigel. Christiane Kritzer visited archives as well and experienced the innovative method of microfadeometry in Dresden. Together with Anna, she participated in the international doctoral colloquium of the ABK. Denise Madsack had the chance to develop empirical methods by attending an art commission session at Vermögen und Bau Baden-Württemberg and was able to work closely with them on a weekly basis. V.E. Mandrij traveled to Haarlem in the Netherlands to present a paper about the sottobosco paintings in a conference questioning the notion of ‘artistic genre’ in art history whereas Verena Wallner traveled to Berlin to visit exhibitions that are central for her research. She interviewed several experts there. Elisa Werner visited another European capital: she went to Paris to research on objects for her corpus. Finally, Elisa, Verena, V.E. and Anna, attended the 35. Deutschen Kunsthistorikertag in Göttingen, where thrilling talks took objects themselves as a starting-point for discussions on art history.

A longer version of our activities is available below as well as a calendar summarizing upcoming events, conferences and exhibitions related to themes and research in the Changing Frames programme.  The most important upcoming date to save is our second annual meeting which will take place on 14-15 May 2020 at the ABK in Stuttgart. Participants will discuss interdisciplinary topics related to “Controversies” involving the fields of art history, art technology and conservation science. We welcome you to take part!

On behalf of our team, we send you all best wishes for a pleasant summer break
