Newsletter WS 21/22

Dear members of the Graduate Research Programme Changing Frames,
Dear readers,

in the winter semester 2021/22 there was a lot to do for the members of the Changing Frames programme, a lot to read and a lot to see. In the process, old and new have come together. Some events from previous semesters were continued and our members focused a great deal of their efforts on writing. Their texts and chapters were read and discussed in colloquia involving the members, supervisors and associates.

Additionally, our work on the interdisciplinary glossary project continued. The glossary is aimed to be a collection of terms for interdisciplinary cooperation between the fields of conservation and art history.

We also continued our series of interviews with experts this year. This time we were pleased to have an exciting conversation with Iris Schäfer, Head of the Department of Art Technology and Conservation at the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne. At the same time, another Changing Frames venture is running behind the scenes: It is a book for the mediation of conservation and art history, which has a younger target group in mind. With the participation of Sigrid Eyb-Green, a children's book is going to be developed featuring all the projects from the Changing Frames group.

There were also many new developments and activities this semester. With A Matter of Teamwork: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Works of Art, a public series of lectures was held in conjunction with two seminars of the same name at the TU Berlin and the University of Konstanz/TH Köln. As speakers, we welcomed experts from both conservation science and art history whose interdisciplinary research involves objects and the building of projects. For insight into their collaboration, we would like to thank Christoph Herm and Christoph Schölzel; Aviva Burnstock, Rebecca Chipkin and Helen Kohn; Petra Mandt, Maria Kokkori and Jilleen Nadolny; Carolin Bohlmann; Anupam Sah and Larry Keith.

Another piece of news this semester concerns the coordination team of the Graduate Research Programme: after Tilly Laaser accepted the call of the TH Köln as professor of conservation and restoration of paintings, Nicolai Eckert joined our team in the autumn of 2021. Nicolai, together with Tanja Klemm, has been coordinating the progamme since then.

In this issue of the newsletter, Changing Frames also reports on new experiences in personal pieces of writing. Under the motto of MACHEN LESEN SEHEN (MAKE READ SEE), they recall challenges, discoveries and inspirations in the last six months.

We hope you enjoy reading this issue and send you our warmest regards on behalf of the entire Changing Frames team,

Denise Madsack and Elisa von Minnigerode
