Newsletter 03 – WS 2019/20

Dear members of the Graduate Research Programme Changing Frames, dear readers,

During the last months our doctoral researchers were actively on the road again, visiting exhibitions, giving talks or going on research trips. As part of their practical training at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design, Lisa Braun, Elisa von Minnigerode and Verena Wallner gained insights into the field of Conservation of Paintings and Sculpture, while Anna Katharina Thaler gained a wider understanding of the Conservation of Works of Art on Paper, Archives and Library Materials. Individual, practice-oriented projects complemented the courses, thus intertwining theory and practice.

V.E. Mandrij gained practical experience at the Cologne Institute of Conservation Sciences (CICS) where s/he made historical reconstructions of butterfly imprints together with our network partner and her/his mentor, Doris Oltrogge. A rare opportunity was given to Denise Madsack, who was able to view art objects on an exclusive guided tour of the Baden-Württemberg state parliament. Christiane Kritzer visited the Dresden University of Fine Arts together with Christoph Krekel and Thomas Prestel, where she got to know the microfading device of Tomasz Łojewski from Kraków. Among other things, the device provides important data regarding the light fastness of pastel colors. A comprehensive summary of the fellows' activities with hyperlinks can be found in the German version.

At the beginning of the semester, the doctoral researchers together with post-doc coordinator Tilly Laaser, discussed the topic of "Controversies" in conservation projects completed in the context of a reading group.

In February, the doctoral researchers learned about handling image rights and copyrights in a joint workshop led by Grischka Petri from the University of Bonn. A two-day exchange conference of the programme with (doctoral) researchers at the Dresden University of Fine Arts, in particular the ESF project "artemak+X", had to be postponed as a result of the current coronavirus pandemic.

Our second annual meeting focusing on interdisciplinary topics related to “Controversies” was scheduled for 13–15 May 2020 but has now been postponed indefinitely due to the current coronavirus pandemic. As soon as things return to normal we will send you a special newsletter with the new date and further information. This will also be published on our website rahmenwechsel.uni.kn.

On behalf of our team, we send you best wishes and hope you stay safe

Christiane Kritzer and Anna Katharina Thaler
